神经科学（neuroscience）也被称为脑科学（brain science），顾名思义，这是研究大脑结构与功能的学科。现代神经科学不过百多年历史，相比于传统的理科，神经科学是一个新兴学科，但它不是一个单一学科，而是一个异常交叉的学科，她跟众多学科有着丰富的联系。这是因为：首先，她的研究对象与多个学科有重叠，包括她与生物学一样，需要研究大脑的分子和细胞；她也跟心理学一样，研究动物的认知过程；而且和哲学一样，她对意识的研究有着浓厚的兴趣。其次，由于大脑的结构和功能都很复杂，脑科学需要借助多学科的工具和方法对大脑进行研究。
